AUGUST 2013
WE ARE IN! We have held three support groups and one big latch on event in the new hall. It is wonderful. So much space and comfort. IT feels so right! It is still a bit chilly in there as our heating source is a bit small for the space and we have yet to find cheap/free curtain tracks...so haven't put up the curtains yet. But when we do, it should be cosy and snug and just perfect.
Thank you so much to ALL of you that have made this a reality for Wharekai Pepe and Koraunui Marae. Thank you to Koraunui for all your support, manpower and ideas!! Thank you to the local businessman who paid for our floors and thank you to all the contractors and volunteers that helped make the dream a reality. xxxxx

JULY 2013
THE FLOORS LOOK AMAAAAZZZIINNNGGGGG!!!! Wiki
and his men did a fabulous job! The painting is all but finished and today we moved in some couches! We have gathered up some pretty nice second hand curtains from some lovely giving people from our community. They don't match....but we don't care!!! We just need curtain rails now...(who would have though such an item would be so expensive!). We are also still on the look out for some floor coverings, like rugs. The plan is that we will be IN THE HALL for the BIG LATCH ON (see homepage)....this is very exciting and we can't wait!!!

JUNE 2013
So, turns out our volunteer wasn't really needed......the Whanau at Koraunui Marae have worked REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY (did I say really...?) hard and have painted the ceiling, walls, foyer and bathrooms! its amazing! it LOOKS amazing! The Wharekai Pepe team are blown away with the result! and the time an effort put in by the family! so from us, a HUGE THANKYOU TO KORAUNUI MARAE WHANAU!
Unfortunately, we have been declined all our grant applications so far for fixtures, fitting and soft furnishings for the hall. We still need $$ OR free made curtains, rugs and other less exciting things like plumbing work and heating work. We have decided to start applying for $$ to cover the cost of installing a gas heater, this looks to be about the $5000 mark...so if you or anyone you know has some funds they would like to share...or anyone who can do such work for the cost of a BBQ and BEER, then let us know!!
To end on a good note though....the floors are starting to take shape, they are being sanded and polished as we speak! Thank-you to the local businessman who has funded this part of the project for us.
At this stage, we hope to be in the Hall by BIG LATCH ONE, which is the first Friday in August.......we shall see...

MAY 2013
PROGRESS....of sorts!!! We have a volunteer called Wayne (found through Volunteer Hutt) who is going to start prepping and painting the bathrooms, foyer and kitchen. We THINK we have a painter for the ceiling in the main Hall....we did have one...but then we didn't...and now we do....(fingers crossed). We HOPE to have the painting on the ceiling complete by end of JUNE at the latest....With July hopefully seeing paint on the walls....then curtains at the same time...and some sort of heating (maybe heat pump) and then we will be able to move in!!!! (the more cosmetic stuff will follow!!!) Also, please cross all crossables that a grant we have applied for to cover the costs of pretty much the entire renovation is accepted (or at least some of it!).
So we still need able bodied volunteers to help prep and paint the interior, anyone who can sew curtains, and any other offers of help!!

APRIL 2013
Progress has been slow so far. Much to the frustrations of all involved. It appears harder than we thought to find the right sorts of volunteers to do plastering and painting! We have the tools, we just need the "man-power". Once we get the plastering done, the paint can be....um...painted? and we can move on to the next bits. We have had a quote done for out lighting and thanks to a lovely electrician, this quote is one we should be able to cover without to much hassle! So one WIN for team Wharekai Pepe. Soon we will be advertising in the local rags for help....hopefully this will move things along a bit for us! Please scroll down for info on what we need, and if you or anyone you know can help out...then please do!!!!
Cheers!!.
Cheers!!.
FROM HUMBLE HALL TO BREASTFEEDING OASIS!!!
Over the past nearly 3 years, our wonderful group has become so incredibly popular and well utilised that we have had to rethink our venue arrangements!!! The Trust invision a space, where mums and their families can come for support and guidance through their breatfeeding concerns, we hope that the current hall aat Koraunui Marae can be transformed into this space... "A Centre" for Breastfeeding mothers and their whanau.
We had been using the Hall off and on as a venue for things such as our wee "Siblings Spot" where siblings of babies having trouble feeding could go to hang out with our wonderful Suzi and give mum and new bub some time to get their issues sorted and we also held out first (hopefully annual) craft/jumble fair there.
As our group size has been ever increasing we had been quietly considering the Hall as a more appropriate venue. We approached the wonderful whanau from Koraunui Marae and asked if we could use The Hall as our group meeting venue. We offered to help renovate it, 1) to get it up and running as a safe, useable space for our group and 2) to show some gratitude and thanks to Koraunui Marae for all their wonderful support!!
With the "ok" from our family from Koraunui, we have slowly started to pool and pull some resources from the community. Our "Merry Jumble of an A-Fair" was a huge success in getting out Hall renovation fund started and we have since secured some awesome free paint from RESENE through their "PaintWise" Scheme. YAY RESENE!!! We have started asking around for items to make our space a comfy place for mums and babies and Suzi is designing the BEST "Sibling Spot" ever!!
Watch this space for updates on how we are getting on with our renovations! If you are or know of any handy people who can paint, sand, scrape, lift heavy things, have electrical knowledge or just a general interest in community spirited adventures, please get in touch! We would LOVE to hear from you!!
