How do the Thursday sessions work?
We run a free drop-in support group on Thursdays (apart from public holidays) from 9am-12noon in the Community Hall at Koraunui Marae in Stokes Valley. You can’t make an appointment, but we do recommend coming as early as you can and we aim to see the last baby at 11.30am. Ideally you'll be seen when your baby is ready to feed, so this may mean waiting for a while. People are not seen in the order in which they arrive. If it is a particularly busy session we will prioritise time with the lactation consultant, and offer you the best support we can with our volunteer Mums and other available resources.
What happens when I arrive?
When you come in one of our volunteer Mums will welcome you and you’ll be asked to sign our register before taking a seat and making yourself comfy. Our aim is to give you the best help and support we can, so we’ll listen to you about what you’re experiencing and talk with you about what kind of help you’re hoping for - this will include filling out a health history form about what’s happening for you and baby. It may take a while before you will be seen by our lactation consultant or someone else with the suitable experience to help you, so in the meantime you’ll be able to have a cuppa and chat further with us or other Mums.
We know coming to a breastfeeding support group for the first time can sometimes be a little daunting, but we aim to offer a friendly and relaxing place where you can come and get the help and support that’s right for you and your baby. And you don’t need to be experiencing problems to come along - we are open to all Mums wanting to breastfeed and gain (or give) support in all its varied forms!
